Back at the Doug Fir, we met the Nick, Jared and Dave from Not an Airplane…and Meghan, and talked a bit about drinking, strippers, and armless French midgets (none of which made the interview)…and music. Nick: It's bizarre everyone is always trying to kill our bass player, mostly because he's just a bass player LMP: Yeah well, (looking at Jared) whose couch in the band do you sleep on? (Laughter)
Jared: (still laughing) I don't sleep on anyone's couch…unless Dave is there Nick: Ah man, did I tell yah about the time I locked my keys, in my car? It took me two hours to get Jared out LMP: So what's the new album called? Nick: The working title right now is everything is unlovable LMP: So that's about me Nick: Yeah, yes it's about how nobody loves you… LMP: I think I'm gonna cry Nick: I thought you already were crying LMP: there just watering (Laughing)
Nick: but yeah I'm excited, this is a big big record for us Dave: So far it's been coming along really really well Nick: Yeah it has, we're recording at Wave Parade Studios, and it's this guy and his name is Lucky Lou. He's recorded…like Granddaddy and a lot of the Central Valley indie rockers… Dave: Not for Nothing, formerly Flying Blind Nick: He's recorded a lot of people in the area around us, he's a good dude, he's good to work with. He's got a real like organic vintage touch, I think it's cool Dave: Which is exactly what you were looking for. Because the first album is completely different than this album, in that it's very…very raw, and very personable… Nick: the new one Dave: I think that should be touched upon, and he's done a great job doing that Nick: It's definitely a step above the last record I recorded, before I met these guys. It was kinda more of a learning experience than anything LMP: Kinda like Sesame Street? Nick: Yes, yes exactly. 1-2-3-4-5-6…7-8-9-10…11-12 LMP: Today's episode is brought to you by the letter "L" Nick: The letter "L" is a fucking sellout LMP: Yeah…I know Nick: It's just trying to get its name all over…corporate whore man (Laughing again!) Pretty much there's laughing after every line and all the while others are talking. Today's episode should have been brought to us by the letter "A", for alcohol.)
Nick: We're doing a five day run, this is actually our last show. We're heading back to California tomorrow. We hit up Sacramento, Eugene, Seattle, and Spokane last night LMP: Wow 4 shows that's a lot in a night Nick: Yeah all last night, LMP: Man…that's a lot in a night Nick: Yeah, we played 12 hours… straight…while driving (More laughing)
Nick: It was weird, we just threw all our shit in the back of the truck and just drove, well Meghan drove, we all sat in the back…and played. We didn't give away a lot of CD's, needless to say. There weren't a lot of hitchhikers. LMP: Well you kill every hitchhiker you meet…so Nick: Yeah, well I do LMP: At least you get the CD back Nick: Well the other problem is that Hitchhiking is illegal in Washington, so that kinda killed our chances Jared: Yeah they have all those signs with the… Nick: No thumbs up Jared: Yeah with the crossed out LMP: I always thought that that was a knock against Roger Ebert (And more laughing)
Dave: It might be…it might be actually. Yah know that's a great way of looking at it (looks at Nick) we should have thought of that Nick: God Dammit (Portion of interview deleted because it was deemed offensive to every living thing on the planet) Nick: So there's a lot of talk right now about the album getting picked up by a small indie label, Off the Air Records, a start up indie label, picking up the record. And that's a big deal for me, I know the guy who… (Inaudible mumbling, something about a label, and yeah can't understand it)…his name is Greg Edwards, and he does a lot of cool stuff. In the Central Valley he's pretty much… Dave: The man Nick: Yeah, he's pretty much the man, when it comes to indie rock or folk. It's just, I don't know, Off the Air, is just on their shit. So we're excited about that, that's a big deal for us, a big step for us. Yeah, um I'm optimistic and I think there's a lot of cooler stuff to come Jared: In that just the fact that we meshed ever so well, the chemistry between us three is… Nick: Yeah we haven't even been together a yeah, and it just feels like we've been playing together forever, it's just been a lot of fun Jared: Just the last five days, I've been up laughing...at people Nick: Yeah, it's just been a fucking blast, and it's going to keep on getting better. |
